Mindful Monday Blog Series 15: Conscious Teacher: Beyond the Role

Being a teacher who is really aware goes way beyond just making lesson plans or dealing with school schedules. It's about actually being there in the moment, showing up with real care and being yourself. In class, that means paying close attention to what students are feeling, picking up on those little changes in how they act, and not just dumping facts but connecting with them on a human level.

I think weaving in things like values and culture makes learning feel alive, not like some boring list to check off.

I am not only defined by my job, though. Deep down, I am just a person trying to grow, like anyone else. The small stuff brings more fulfilment, like hearing students laugh during an activity or simply playing the CHARADE game with them

I did this with my S1 set 3 afternoon period, as it could get boring when I would just let them copy the lesson, whereby the explanation would just slip into their cerebrum. After all, learning is more fun in an engaging way, like a little movement that, of course, has a connection with the topic!

My sense of who I am stretches out from teaching into searching for what matters, celebrating where I come from, and believing that coming together as a group can change things.

Outside of work, creativity keeps me going, along with staying connected to others. I like making designs that lift spirits, for example, the Digital Yearbook for the S5 Class of 2026

Technology can help spark ideas, too, in ways that surprise you. But I also need time to think quietly, balancing all the giving with taking care of myself. It seems like silence is just as important as the fun parts sometimes; hence, staying alone is the best gateway towards self-actualisation!

Achievements are nice markers along the way, but they do not sum up everything.

I am a teacher, a mentor who is always learning, envisioning a more futuristic school, and meditating to live my soul purpose. This whole idea of being conscious ties into honouring all sides of life, the work stuff and the personal, what shows and what stays hidden. Being a teacher and being human overlap in messy ways that I am still figuring out. On Mindful Monday, that wholeness stands out, even if it's not always easy to hold onto.
