Mindful Monday Blog 14: From Reaction to Reflection – A New Way to Show Up at School

Reactions frequently happen rapidly in the hectic pace of school life, such as an unfriendly remark, a frustrated sigh, or an unconscious decision. However, what if we took a moment to think things through before answering? What if we reminded ourselves and our students that we have the ability to choose present over impulse at every moment?

This week's Mindful Monday encourages us to consider a fresh approach to attending class that is based on introspection, emotional intelligence, and deliberate action.

From Response to Introspection

Reactions are instinctive. Stress, emotion, and habit shape them. In contrast, reflection is thoughtful. In contrast, reflection is thoughtful. It invites us to stop, observe, and make a decision. This change can turn disagreement into connection in the classroom.

Reflection helps students develop their emotional intelligence.

It enables individuals to identify their emotions, comprehend their triggers, and grow in empathy. Reflection helps teachers become more patient, calendar, and build stronger bonds with their students.

This is about development, not perfection. It involves setting an example of the kind of emotional development we want to foster in our students.

Three easy approaches to include reflection in the school day are as follows:

  • Morning Check-In: Start by asking yourself,
  • "What feeling am I bringing into today?"
  •  "What do I need to feel calm?"

Pause Before Responding: Instruct pupils to inhale deeply before responding to a classmate or a question.

  • Journaling at the end of the day:
  • Ask students to write about a moment that they would handle differently the next time and one that they are proud of.
  • These routines don't require much time, but they create enduring habits.

TRY THIS ACTIVITY WITH YOUR STUDENTS:

Guidelines: Consider a time today when you experienced a powerful feeling. Reflect with the following prompts.

  1. What feeling did I experience today?
  • For instance, how did I react when I felt anxious, excited, or frustrated?
  • For instance, I spoke up, turned to leave, and remained silent. What could I do differently the next time?
  • For instance, inhale deeply, seek assistance, and speak kindly.
Encourage students to create their answer with soothing colours or symbols to help them feel rooted.

What's the rationale?

A Novel Approach to Appearance

We make room for development, grace, and sincere connection when we shift from reaction to reflection. We teach our students that emotions are signals to be understood rather than issues to be resolved. We also remind ourselves that each day is an opportunity to show up with purpose.

Let's include introspection in our classroom teaching and interaction with students. Let's listen before we pass judgement, pause before we act, and take a breath before we speak.

because it matters how we present ourselves!
